Sustainability at Silver Star
Sustainability is Balance
We’re focusing on maintaining that balance. At Silver Star, sustainability is more than a goal—it’s a commitment to preserving our natural surroundings while sharing them responsibly. We believe in promoting our beautiful region in a way that respects its ecosystems, so that future generations can continue to enjoy Silver Star’s unique beauty.
Proudly Biosphere Committed
At Destination Silver Star, we believe in safeguarding the beauty and integrity of our surroundings for future generations. That’s why, Destination Silver Star is proud to be part of Biosphere, a global initiative developed by the Responsible Tourism Institute. Each step taken toward this goal is verified by Biosphere, ensuring transparency and accountability. We Like To See Sustainable Development
Sustainable Recycling and Waste Disposal
The Waste Transfer Station is an essential resource for our community, supporting sustainable waste management for residents and businesses alike. Bagged residential and commercial waste is accepted for a fee, while Destination Silver Star provides and manages accessible recycling and composting bins.
This facility is made possible through our partnership with the Regional District North Okanagan. For opening times and a list of accepted materials, click on the link below.
Raising Awareness for Local Species and the Natural Environment
We share our home with awe-inspiring wildlife. We encourage both guests and residents to appreciate these animals while respecting their natural habitats. Destination Silver Star proudly serves on the board of the Silver Star Bear Stewardship Group, a dedicated, community-led organization focused on protecting local bear populations and reducing human-bear conflicts.
As active participants, we helped plan, develop, and implement the new Interactive Bear Trail around Brewers Pond. Along the trail, meet Scrapper—a striking bear sculpture made entirely from recycled materials—and visit The Rub Tree exhibit to learn about how bears communicate.
Strengthening Our Community: Supporting Local Entrepreneurs and Businesses
Through targeted initiatives, Destination Silver Star aims to showcase the unique offerings of Silver Star to create sustainable growth opportunities for our local economy. The annual Wine and Beer and Cider Festivals highlight local agricultural producers, wineries, breweries, and cideries. These events not only celebrate local flavours, but also encourage festival attendees to enjoy meals in the village, explore shops, and consider overnight stays, benefiting restaurants, retailers, accommodations. Destination Silver Star collaborates closely with local artisans and suppliers to bring unique events and experiences to life. These initiatives help achieve the goal of making Silver Star a welcoming and supportive place for local talent and businesses to thrive.
